Our Baptist heritage has taught us to cherish and defend religious liberty, and deny the right of any secular or religious authority to impose a confession of faith upon a church or body of churches. We honor the principles of soul competency and the priesthood of believers, affirming together both our liberty in Christ and our accountability to each other under the Word of God. However, whether your religious background is Baptist or some other, we welcome all who desire to worship Christ with us! As we come together for worship, discipleship, and mission, here are a set of beliefs that form the basis of our faith and practice.
We believe in one triune God, eternally existent in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:18-19, 2 Corinthians 13:14, Hebrews 1:1-4
We believe in the full deity and full humanity of Christ. Philippians 2:5-8, Luke 2:40, John 1:1-5, Hebrews 4:15
We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit who indwells every Christian's life for the purpose of living a God-reflective life. John 16:7-11, 1 Corinthians 12:13, Ephesians 4:30
We believe the human race is sinful and separated from God and therefore must experience the work of Christ by faith in order to have a relationship with God. Romans 3:10-20, Ephesians 2:1-3, 1 Colossians 1:13-14
We believe in the substitutionary atonement of Christ. Romans 5:6-9, Galatians 3:13-14, Philippians 3:8-11
We believe in the authority and holy inspiration of Scripture. 2 Timothy 3:16, Romans 15:4, 2 Peter 3:1-2
We believe that the church is the Body of Christ and is to be about His work of making disciples of Christ in the world. Ephesians 1:15-23, Matthew 28:16-20, 1 Corinthians 12:12-31
We believe that believers baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper are the two ordinances of the church. Matthew 28:19, Luke 22:14-23, I Corinthians 11:23-26
Becoming a member of a local church is an important part of a Christian’s spiritual growth. While church membership does not save you, those who know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord desire to follow Him and obey Him. Jesus established the church as a place where healthy relationships built on trust and accountability occur. Membership should not be an optional aspect of a Christian’s life, but an important aspect of their growth.
How Do I Join?
If you desire to join First Baptist:
- Step 1 – Set up a meeting with the pastor. This is a great opportunity for the pastor to hear your testimony and for you to ask him questions.
- Step 2 – Attend our Membership Class. This class meets as needed at 9:45am Sunday morning and provides a time to learn more about the Church (e.g., affiliations, goals, and vision).
- Step 3 – Be presented for membership to the Church. After steps 1&2, you may come forward as the invitation is given in a morning worship service or notify the pastor of your desire for to be presented by him at the conclusion of a worship service. Afterward, the church will vote, making you an official part of our church family!
Everyone is welcome to attend our Membership class for informational purposes only; there is no requirement to commit to membership. Please contact us and schedule a meeting with the pastor.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT First Baptist?
First, Expect Imperfect People
We never want to give the impression that we are perfect and without problems. The members of First Baptist get angry and upset, we have our desires and preferences, we laugh and we cry, we have our hopes and dreams, and we are just like everybody else. With all this being true, we know that Jesus provides the answer to all of our problems. We are sinners who have been forgiven and we desire others to be forgiven as well and live their lives for the glory of Jesus Christ.
Second, Expect to Be warmly Welcomed Just As You Are
Whether you are a regular member or a first-time guest, whether you wear a coat and tie or dressed in jeans and t-shirt, you will be warmly welcomed just as you are. We believe that it's the attitude of your heart that matters to God, rather than your physical appearance. Our concern is about meeting people where they are and help one another grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Thirdly, We Expect to Worship
We hope you are blessed by the warm reception but most importantly we hope you worship God through Christ-honoring music, and a biblically-based sermon. We believe that Sunday is truly the Lord’s day and we come here to offer our sacrifice of praise to Him from whom all blessings flow. Our services are approximately an hour long.
Fourth, Expect Something for Everyone
We believe the church is about making faithful followers of Christ and equipping themfor being a Christian witness in the world they live. We offer small groups for all age groups that meet on Sunday at 9:45 and at various times and locations during the week.
Kids Life is the children’s ministry (preschool through 5th Grades) at First Baptist Church of Walterboro. Though it might appear that our role is simply childcare or babysitting, we are much more than this. For us, children’s ministry is truly a ministry. Our mission at KidsLife is to lead children to a new life in God and to help them grow into passionate followers of Jesus Christ. We seek to partner with parents to grow children spiritually from a, "Seed to a Tree"! We provide activities and services that are biblical, relational, safe and fun.
Our Student Ministry provides youth in grades 7th-12th with a fun time of fellowship and discipleship as they grow in their relationships with God and others. In addition to Sunday mornings, the Student Ministry offers activities on Wednesday nights as well as special events and camps throughout the year.
